Breakout rooms

Friday, Apr. 16

Section 3 of chapter 30 has four sets of main sentences (either individual sentences, or multiple main sentences joined by et).

  1. Find the indepedent (main) clause(s) in each sentence.
  2. Make a vocab list for the main clauses only.
  3. Translate the main clauses only. If your main clause is long, focus first on the most basic components: subject, verb, direct object (if any). Add adjectives, adverbs, prepositional phrases, or other descriptive vocabulary only after you’ve understand the basic structure of the sentence.

Here’s how they break down:

a. Hydram Lernaeam Typhonis filiam cum capitibus nouem ad fontem Lernaeum interfecit.

b. haec tantam uim ueneni habuit ut afflatu homines necaret, et si quis eam dormientem transierat, uestigia eius afflabat et maiori cruciatu moriebatur.

c. hanc Minerua monstrante interfecit et exinterauit et eius felle sagittas suas tinxit;

d. itaque quicquid postea sagittis fixerat, mortem non effugiebat, unde postea et ipse periit in Phrygia.

Breakout 2: using today’s exercises, here:

  1. rewrite each sentence as two sentences
  2. translate the two independent sentences
  3. translate the original complex sentence

Wednesday, Feb. 17

For your assigned sentence, decide:

  • every sentence has an independent clause: what tense and mood will you use?
  • if your sentence includes a dependent construction, what construction will you use?
  • find the principal parts of all verbs you plan to use

Levels of subordination

For each of the following two sentences:

  • place each clause on a separate line
  • prefix each clause with a > for each level of subordination.
  1. Hyginus says that Hercules killed Neleus when Neleus refused to purify him.
  2. When Deianira realized that Neleus had tricked her, she sent Lychas, who had given the poisoned garment to Hercules, to bring it back before he could put it on, but she was too late.

Composing relative clauses

The following pairs of simple English sentences (that is, a single independent clause) have a noun in common. Combine them into one complex sentence by keeping the first sentence as the independent clause, and making the second sentence a relative clause.

  1. After Hercules killed Megara and their sons, Neleus was not willing to purify Hercules. Neleus was then killed.
  2. Hercules stole the Delphic tripod. Jupiter ordered the tripod to be returned to Apollo.
